Genuine conversation

  • By Professor Allen Mallari

Have you ever heard of elevator pitch? When someone is in the elevator with you, and you have 10 floors to go up.  What would be your conversation?  First thing you would say is “hi” or “hello” and introduce yourself and then the intent or sometimes quiet and not talk at all. But if you engage in conversation, that small time you have, will definitely have an informative and quality conversation. Nowadays, when you are with someone or on a date, there comes the cellphone with them. They send text messages while you are having a conversation.  You might have one hour of conversation but how long is genuine conversation that was invested in it.

We don’t have civility in conversation anymore, as we are glued or tied to the cellphone or the things we are busy about.

What is a genuine conversation:

  1. Remove your cell phone. First is to remove all interference that will deter you from your conversation.
  2. Pay close attention. By listening and responding appropriately.
  3. Conversation that makes sense. Have a conversation that will uplift and encourage each other. Participate and exchange opinions.
  4. Respect for one another.  Take turns in conversation, meaning one after the other. Create a two-way conversation.
  5. Always focus. Never let your focus be drawn to someone or something else.
  6. Relax.  Tune your body to the conversation and don’t allow yourself to be bothered with other things.
  7. Look for commonality. In order for a genuine conversation to be effective, you have to be on the same page. Looking at the same page, both of you are on the same subject or topic.

These little tips will help you to have a genuine conversation.  You will have a sense of connection through your conversation.

In order for the involved parties to have a genuine or authentic conversation, all of you must do the same or else, it won’t be effective. It takes two to tango, in order for all of you to dance at the same time.
