Civility for All: Act of Kindness and Respect

  • By Professor Allen Mallari

How to be a global citizen, where you can have kindness and respect for everyone!

Global means the whole world! And we are all citizens of the world. Culture and traditions differ from each other. But when you say kindness and respect it’s like respecting others no matter what color, language, gender or nationality. It’s easy to miss even if you speak the same language or same neighborhood you don’t get civilized anymore. As here in America you don’t even know the name of your neighbor. You just wave, that’s if they are friendly, then continue with your business.

Our conscious ability to care. Thinking of others with respect and kindness. It’s the compass of right and wrong. The barometer of what is good and bad.

How to give kindness and respect:

  1. Listen to their perspective. Never assume or overthink, or else you will miss their point of view.
  2. Be aware of other people’s feelings, as we sometimes are too concerned about ours.
  3. Acknowledge and be thankful. Even when someone opens the door for you, learn how to appreciate and acknowledge them.
  4. Accept when you are wrong. Never try to correct the mistakes by another mistake. Apologize and man up.
  5. Respect their culture. Don’t make fun or even criticize for who they are, whoever they are, whatever they are wearing, how they eat.  Always be respectful.

How to get to know the other side:

  1. Dialogue. Have a conversation and exchange of thoughts and have a listening ear.
  2. Sympathy. This puts action to compassion.
  3. Empathy. The ability to understand their feelings.
  4. Acceptance. Receive people for who they are.
  5. Expression. By learning that even smiling, nodding your head, shaking or waving your hands  are universal expressions..
  6. Words. Watch your words as it can have different interpretations to the others.

One person I met, he traveled to 130 countries, he says he learned one word first and then moved to the next learning, and the word is thank you. If we can have a culture where we can hear the other person first, and receive them with open arms, we will have a better world.  That is why CIVILITY FOR ALL is very important, by giving kindness and respect!
