Encouragement

When common sense is no longer common.

Common or uncommon sense.

When common sense isn’t common. The term common sense is sound and prudent judgment and a simple perception of the situation or fact. The majority of the people accept the results or likely even if it’s not.  In short, it is what most people do, that’s why it is called common sense.  Even without reading the definition or understanding it, we all use the word “common sense”.  As if it’s easy and everybody’s perception of the situation is the same, but it is not, as it’s based on the environment and culture of the person.

When you grow your mindset, you are no longer in a common sense category but separate opinion and logic the way you think. The common to you is no longer human knowledge, but human intellectual knowledge.  A person who does not graduate or not even gone to school has common sense. We all acquire common sense from the day we are born, for example, fish don’t fly and birds don’t swim. That’s common sense.

What is an uncommon sense? When a person continues to believe that the result is differ from what the norm expects.  They already have set their ways to their own beliefs and no one or nothing can change them.

When you have uncommon or lack of common sense:

  1. Lack of Intelligence. Knowing is one thing, but the intelligence on how you understand it is another.
  2. Not considering all possible results. When you lack common sense, you just take whatever the result is and accept it.
  3. Saying one thing, doing another.  They tend to suggest doing it this way, but you will always catch them doing another.
  4. Not accepting new changes. They hate change. They don’t want to learn something new.
  5. Selfish. Always thinking of themselves. They don’t consider other people’s feelings as they are only out there for themselves.

How to gain common sense:

  1. Perspective – by putting everything in your perspective, what is right and wrong, you gain more knowledge and understanding on how to act and react in every situations
  2. Keep it simple stupid (KISS) – making it complicated will make matter worst. It has to be easy, even a no brainer can follow what you mean.
  3. Reality Check – you have to face reality, not fantasy. We often rationalize things even though the answer is right in front of you.
  4. Conceptualize – put everything in order and arrange them into concept rather than figure things out in your head.
  5. Making sound decision – practical decisions and informed judgments based on the facts presented in reality

A sound practical judgment is intellectual sense.  But each individual has their own judgment on everything, so how can it be common sense? Even the word common means every one. You will see that almost everyone now is for himself or herself. We need to redefine that word from common sense to intellectual sense.  We also need to redefine the definition of common sense to sense that the heart of the matter is what really matters.
